Dr. Roberto F. Aguilera

Roberto F. Aguilera is an energy economist with the Curtin University Oil & Gas Innovation                                                                  Centre, Australia, and an associate of SERVIPETROL LTD in Calgary. 

From 2013 to 2017, he was an analyst with the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting
Countries (OPEC) Secretariat, Vienna, Austria, where he was a coauthor of their annual
World Oil Outlook.

Other previous affiliations include the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis
(IIASA), the University of Vienna, and the Catholic University of Chile.

Dr. Aguilera has participated in numerous energy studies, including with the
World Petroleum Council, US National Petroleum Council, UN Expert Group on Resource
Management, and German Institute for Economic Research (DIW Berlin). He is also a regular                                         
commentator to broadcast and print media. 

His publication record comprises The Price of Oil, a 2015 book published by Cambridge University Press in English and Chinese.

He holds PhD and master’s degrees in energy economics from the Colorado School of Mines and a bachelor’s degree from Haskayne School of Business, University of Calgary. He is a member of the SPE, AAPG, IAEE and AIE. 

He was the 2018-2019 SPE Distinguished Lecturer on the subject of the price of oil, a program which took him to nearly 30 cities throughout the UAE, Bahrain, Pakistan, Kazakhstan, Venezuela, Colombia, Bolivia, Portugal, Spain, Switzerland, Austria, Nigeria, Mozambique, Canada, the USA and Australia.

Currently he is a member of the SPE Asia Pacific Regional Technical Advisory Committee, the scholarship chairperson of SPE Western Australia, a member of the SPE Reservoir Advisory Committee, and a Director/Vice-treasurer of the new SPE Management Technical Section.

Dr. Roberto Aguilera

Dr. Roberto Aguilera is Professor of Petroleum Engineering at the University of Calgary and                                                              President of SERVIPETROL LTD. He is a petroleum engineering graduate from the                                                                          Universidad de America at Bogota, Colombia, and holds Masters and PhD degrees in                                                                                    petroleum engineering from the Colorado School of Mines. He is a member of the                                                                                            Petroleum Society of Canada, SPE, CSPG, AAPG, SPWLA, CWLS, APEGA and ACIPET.                                                                                      He has worked for Texaco in Colombia and the USA; HK van Poollen and Associates in the                                                                          USA; Intercol (Exxon) in Colombia; Cities Service in Argentina; and Soquip in Quebec, Canada.

A consultant since 1978, he has been involved in petroleum engineering studies in Canada,
the USA, Mexico, Venezuela, the North Sea, Abu Dhabi, Algeria, Egypt, Peru, Brazil,
Colombia, Argentina, Indonesia, Guatemala, Yugoslavia, Italy, Pakistan, Libya, Australia,
Ecuador, New Zealand, Chile, Philippines, China, Japan, Yemen, Israel, Cuba, Bolivia,                                                                            Vietnam, Albania, Jordan, Norway, Russia, Thailand and Iraq. Determination of reserves                                                                                and economic evaluations has been an integral part of many of these studies.

He has presented short industry courses dealing with "Naturally Fractured Reservoirs", "Reservoir Engineering", "Horizontal Wells", and/or "Well Testing" in Canada, the USA, Colombia, Mexico, Peru, Argentina, Venezuela, Guatemala, Brazil, Egypt, India, Japan, Denmark, Italy, Syria, England, Iran, Yugoslavia, Kuwait, Indonesia, Libya, New Zealand, Greece, China, Turkey, Germany , Vietnam, Bangladesh, Cuba, Scotland, Saudi Arabia, France, Bolivia, Spain, The Netherlands, Hungary, Norway and Russia.

He was an AAPG lecturer on the subject of "Fractured Reservoir Analysis" from 1984 through 1996. He received the Outstanding Service Award (1994), the Distinguished Service Medal (2006) from the Petroleum Society of CIM, the 2011 SPE Canada Regional Distinguished Achievement Award for Petroleum Engineering Faculty, the 2011 SPE ‘A Peer Apart’ distinction, and the recognition as Guest Professor of the China University of Petroleum (Eastern China) (2011 – 2016). He was a Distinguished Author of the Journal of Canadian Petroleum Technology (1993 and 1999), the SPE Distinguished Lecturer for the 2000-2001 season discussing "Naturally Fractured Reservoirs", the 2019 recipient of the SPE Distinguished Achievement Award for Petroleum Engineering Faculty, and the 2021 recipient of the SPE Reservoir Description and Dynamics Award. He is the Executive Editor of the SPE Journal, a member of the SPE Legion of Honor and a SPE Lifetime member.

Dr. Aguilera has developed many techniques for evaluation of naturally fractured reservoirs that have been published in leading journals of the oil industry. He is author of the book Naturally Fractured Reservoirs (PennWell, 1980; 2nd Edition, 1995), co-author of The Technology of Artificial Lift Methods (Vol.4, PennWell, 1984) with Kermit Brown et al., co-author of Horizontal Wells (Gulf Publishing Co., 1991), co-author of Determination of Oil and Gas Reserves (Petroleum Society Monograph No. 1, First Edition: 1994, Second Edition: 2004), co-editor of Advances in the Study of Naturally Fractured Reservoirs (Geological Society of London, 2014), and Editor-in-Chief and co-author of the SPE Monograph "Unconventional Gas and Tight Oil Exploitation" (2018).
